“The good ended happily, and the bad unhappily. That is what fiction means”
For Summer 2021 The Proteans are delighted to present one of Oscar Wilde’s most beloved plays, The Importance of Being Earnest.
The Proteans return to Basingstoke’s ‘best-kept secret’ the Walled Garden in Down Grange, for another of their popular performances of classic plays. This year the group will be taking on the fun and farcical comedy The Importance of Being Earnest across not one, but two weekends in July, giving different members of the group the opportunity to take on the lead roles!
Expect plenty of irreverent fun, silly songs, crazy costumes and the perfect setting for a summer evening with friends. The Importance of Being Earnest is the tall tale of two bachelors, John ‘Jack’ Worthing and Algernon ‘Algy’ Moncrieff, who create alter egos named Ernest to escape their tiresome lives. They attempt to win the hearts of two women who, conveniently, claim to only love men called Ernest, with hilarious consequences.
As ever, ticket holders are welcome to arrive bring picnics and prosecco to enjoy as they soak up the atmosphere and enjoy some outdoor theatre.
