Drawn from life

Saturday 6th July 2024 - Friday 19th July 2024 10am - 6pm

TICKETS: FREE

Drawn from Life is an exhibition in celebration of the human form with drawings and paintings by a group of artists who meet to create art direct from life.

The Drawn from Life group was established back in January of 1997. Initially the members were all art teachers or others with a background in art and they began meeting together regularly to draw and paint from the human form.

There is no tuition within the group as it was always intended to provide an opportunity for like-minded people to join together, in an activity they enjoy. With currently around 12 members, mostly of mature years, they continue to meet regularly on Saturday mornings during college term time in one of the art studios at QMC.

Our sessions are notably friendly and relaxed and we are fortunate to have a list of regular and popular life models, with the group members taking turns at directing weekly sessions which assists in achieving a variety of poses.

Our most recent exhibition was in 2022, which was also at Proteus Creation Space, and we are very much looking forward to displaying our work which will reflect the wide range of artistic styles and media used by our members.

The exhibition is FREE to attend. No booking required to attend, just pop by! The café will be open for refreshments and there is a free carpark on site.

Opening hours: 10am – 6pm (closed Sunday)

More about the Drawn From Life group

Through Mary Nelson, an art tutor at Queen Mary’s College Basingstoke, we were able to hire a studio at the college and for some time Mary ran the group with Susie Busbridge (formerly Susie Kitsel, an art teacher) who took over the reins when Mary left. Sadly Susie has since died but her husband Buz, who is also a founder member, continues to attend the group. We are currently organised by another founder member, Sheila Dick, who is assisted by David Bloomfield.

Membership of the group is restricted to personal recommendation by either an existing member or by someone known to the group and this has ensured we have had a good continuity.
