Young People’s Theatre

Creating amazing experiences, promoting education and enriching lives of young people in Basingstoke and North Hampshire through the power of performing arts. 

Central Studio, Anvil Arts and Proteus Theatre Company are working together to bring accessible theatre experiences for all young people through Basingstoke Youth Theatre. With opportunities to participate in two productions each year, students will gain fantastic experience performing on at least two well knowl theatre stages in the local area such as the Haymarket and Central Studio. Working with professional artists in the performing arts industry, this programme offers an opportunity like no other to make a lasting impact on all young people who choose to be involved in the performing arts.

From the foundation group for younger children,ProActivate for 6-8 year olds, where students take their first steps in learning skills such as improvisation, movement, storytelling, music and mime, to our semi-professional theatre group; Proteus Young Company for 16-21 year olds, where members devise new work and continue their theatrical development with the support of professional artists, there are opportunities for all young people to be involved.

ProActivate for 6-8 year olds

Mondays, 4pm-5pm at Proteus Creation Space

Our foundation group for younger children, these high quality and affordable workshops are an excellent introduction to drama. It allows students to take their first steps in learning new skills such as improvisation, movement, storytelling, music and mime for the stage. The workshops allow them to create their own drama through role-play, either as a class or in smaller groups. All are welcome, regardless of ability or experience. £55 per term, 3 terms per year.

 

ProPellers for 8-11 year olds

Tuesdays, 6:30pm-8:30pm at Central Studio, QMC campus

Suitable for children of junior school age, this group kick starts everything students need to know about life in theatre. It focuses on the basic skills needed to be a stage actor, allowing members to take part in workshops as well as performances of both comedy and improvisation, all while working alongside professional artists in a fun atmosphere. £80 per production (2 productions per year)

 

ProActives for 11-14 year olds

Mondays, 6:30pm-8:30pm at Central Studio, QMC campus

Building further on drama skills, this group takes a more serious approach to drama and theatre and with more emphasis on performance, focusing on physical theatre, text-based work, characterisation and voice.
Group members will take part in two performances per year. £80 per production (2 productions per year)

 

Basingstoke Youth Theatre for 14-16 year olds

Thursdays, 6.30pm-8.30pm at Central Studio, QMC campus

A more advanced group than the other youth theatre groups, the work will focus on classic or contemporary plays as well as devising their own work. Members of this group will be required to participate in two productions per year, either at Central Studio or The Haymarket, and will have opportunities to take on lead roles in the productions as they develop their craft. £80 per production (2 productions per year)

 

Proteus Young Company for 16-21 year olds

Wednesdays, 6.30pm-9pm at Proteus Creation Space

Proteus Young Company is our most advanced, semi-professional youth theatre group, allowing young adults aged 16+ to continue their theatrical development in a professional environment and working with the support of professional artists. In addition to devising new work, members will work with some of the most experimental new writings of our time, and are required to participate in two productions per year.  £80 per production (2 productions per year)

 

To join

Anyone is eligible to join our inclusive groups. Weekly rehearsals are run by professionals and take place at Central Studio (on the campus of Queen Mary's College) or at the Creation Space.
