| Road Kill
summer performance project
1 - 12 August
promonade performance - Friday 12 August at Milestones Museum
proteus , The Haymarket Theatre in Basingstoke and Milestones Museum worked together on a combined summer performance project, ROAD KILL.
All the participants were aged between 14 and 25, the ‘Big Brother' generation, and spent two weeks working with professionals to learn and use the very techniques the media uses on them to create the cult of celebrity. The project, which has been funded by Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council, has allowed young people across North Hampshire to work with professional theatre directors and designers.
Some of you may have noticed a few strange goings on in the town during the project as the idea was to bring a flavour of the Edinburgh festival to Basingstoke: Walking Boxes, Bodyguards with no-one to look after, a Samba procession and all manner of unusual characters roaming the streets.
For two weeks we explored a range of theatre techniques not normally covered by traditional “youth theatre”. These included creating characters for street theatre, processional theatre and invisible/instant theatre. The cast took part in design and making workshops, Samba drumming workshops (courtesy of the Anvil), learnt stage fighting techniques and devised a performance for Milestones Museum.
We hope we have proved that theatre is not purely something that takes place on a Stage, but can surround and enrich our everyday lives – and that things are not always exactly what they seem!
