about the creative team........
Mary Swan - Director
Mary Swan is the new Artistic Director of proteus, having previously been Associate Director at The New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich and Solent Peoples Theatre in Southampton. Work at Ipswich included "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "Field", "Liquidizing Lizards" (a collaboration with poet Brian Patten), and "Macbeth". She has also created large scale work for and within a diverse range of communities including mental health service users for the "Shrinkwrapped" installation project at Solent, and the culturally diverse communities in Suffolk for the "Way Black East" project for The New Wolsey.
She has developed the use of film as a texture, transforming the playing space and actors within it. "Peter Pan" will be a highly physical performance, drawing on circus skills, puppetry and movement skills as diverse as capoeira to create a dynamic re-telling of this classic tale.
James Barry - Writer
James has worked as an actor, writer and director all over the country, including previous stints at both proteus and the Haymarket, Basingstoke (back when it was Horseshoe). James was Artistic Director of Ici D'Art Theatre Company for five years before his present stints for proteus, during which time he has scripted seven shows. Last year James had three Christmas shows running, including "Aladdin" at Princes Hall in Aldershot and "Puss in Boots" at Jackson's Lane in Highgate. For proteus he wrote "Four Dames in search of a Panto" which went down a storm in village halls!
For the creation of "Peter Pan" James and Mary have returned to the original book, "Peter Pan and Wendy", and the script seeks to recapture the spirit and beauty of Pan from the Hook-like clutches of its recent second-rate pantomime incarnations.
Paul Wild - Composer
Paul has worked with Mary as composer and musician on most of her previous productions including "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead", "Liquidizing Lizards" and "Macbeth". In creating the soundtrack for the show, he will be taking the ephemeral qualities in the music of Nick Drake as an inspiration for the musical direction of the piece.
He has produced two CD's with his band "Dark Acres", and continues to write, perform and produce music with a number of collaborators.
This production of Peter Pan is by arrangement with Great Ormond Street Hospital Chlidren's Charity and Samuel French Limited.
