What Every Body Wants (Breakthrough 2003)
10 April - 31 October 2003

Workshop Leaders - Deborah Wilding & Dave Twigg

For the third successive year, the project was developed over 6 months in collaboration with local people affected by physical disability or mental health issues. Based on the work of the renowned Brazilian theatre practitioner Augusto Boal and using forum theatre to form a sense of community where participants feel comfortable enough to express themselves freely, the participants explored the perceptions, myths and challenges surrounding physical disability and mental health.

proteus worked with the workshop participants, professional actors and writer, Ali Campbell, to produce "What Everybody Wants?" - an interactive play focusing on the challenges surrounding physical disability and mental health which toured to more than 30 day care and residential centres across Hampshire, Berkshire and Surrey during October 2003. Breakthrough was also showcased in Basingstoke to invited members of the local community and in London to an invited audience of individuals and organisations working in the fields of arts, health and business.

The Team:

Director - Deborah Wilding
Dramaturg - Ali Campbell
Performers - Kevin Johnson, Esi Hardy, Yasmin Gurreeboo, Samantha Sanns

"This was as goog, if not better than last year. The following day the service users, unsolicited, were still talking about the performance and making perceptive comments about the scenario"
