Charlie
a celebration of an unsurpassed comic genius
8 March - 9 April 2000
Charlie tells the story of Charles Spencer Chaplin, the ultimate rags to riches tale. Having mastered his craft in the music halls, his talent, determination and ambition drove him to achieve world-wide renown when the movie industry was in its infancy. Yet despite considerable fame and fortune, he was frequently dogged by periods of self-doubt and despair.
The play covers Chaplin's early years until the death of his mother, whose influence on his life was particularly significant, in 1928. Although licence has been taken with certain scenes, the plot follows Charlie's life story closely - and of those nearest to him.
Charlie played to venues throughout Hampshire and both audience and press agreed that the show confirmed proteus as one of the strongest touring companies in the South.
